This is the check people skip, and it's the one that moves the price. The back of an iPhone 16 Plus is a single sheet of color-infused glass. There's no trim and no seam across it. It's the largest back panel in the generation at 6.7 inches. There's more of it to go wrong.

Color works against you here. On black and ultramarine, a hairline crack reads as a reflection. Most owners study the screen, glance at the back, and call it clean.

Take the case off. Put the phone screen down under one bright lamp. Tilt it slowly so the light sweeps corner to corner. Then run a fingernail out from the camera pill to each corner. Do the same around both lens covers. A crack catches the nail. A scratch doesn't.

Check the two lens covers on their own while you're there. They're separate pieces of glass and they sit proud of the body. A short drop onto gravel chips them.
