An Unlocked item pays more than a carrier locked item (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, etc). Carrier locked means the phone will only work on one network until that network releases it. On this model unlocked is the highest of the five options in every square of the grid. AT&T is second everywhere. T-Mobile and Verizon land within a few dollars of each other below that, and anything else pays least.
Most people call this a trade-in. We call it a Buyback, and on a phone this new there is something worth saying that a competitor would not. A carrier's offer on a current handset is at its most generous right now. They are trying to move this year's phone. The credit they hang on a nearly new iPhone 17 can beat what anyone will pay you in cash. So check theirs before you take ours. We would rather lose this one than have you find out afterward.
Leave an iPhone 17 face up on a desk and the screen never goes fully dark. It dims down and keeps showing the clock, the date and whatever widgets you left there. Apple calls that the Always-On display. It is switched on when the phone comes out of the box, and the iPhone 17 is the first regular iPhone to have it. Until this one it was a Pro feature.
That matters because of what the screen is made of. An OLED panel lights each pixel on its own. Pixels holding the same clock for hours a day, every day, can dim unevenly and leave a faint shadow of it behind. That is called burn-in. Burn-in grades an iPhone Faulty here.
Checking takes about twenty seconds. Open Settings, then Display & Brightness, and turn Always On off. Pull up a plain white photo, or a blank white page in Safari, and push the brightness all the way up. Look at the strip along the top where the clock sits, then at the area around the Dynamic Island. A faint gray clock, or a band that reads darker than the white around it, is burn-in. It shows against white and almost nothing else, which is how people own a ghosted phone for a year without seeing it.
While you are on that screen, check the Always On row is there at all. Every iPhone 17 has one. If it is missing, the display in your phone is not the one Apple fitted. A replaced screen is its own Faulty rule, separate from burn-in.

Do the white-screen check first if you have not already, because burn-in is the one thing on this model that quietly changes the answer. A prepaid USPS label arrives by email. Sign out of iCloud and erase the phone before it goes in the box, then wrap it so nothing is pressing on the glass. Keep the cable and the box, we do not pay extra for them. If you change your mind at any point before we ship the payment, the phone comes back to you and that costs nothing either.

Swipe up and down a long list, a settings page or a web article, and watch the text. On an iPhone 17 the motion is noticeably smoother, because the screen refreshes at up to 120Hz. The iPhone 16 tops out at 60. The second check is the lock screen: leave the phone face up on a desk and an iPhone 17 keeps showing a dimmed clock, while an iPhone 16 goes black. Count the lenses. Two on the back means iPhone 17 and you are on the right page. Three means iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max, and those pay considerably more, so it is worth getting right. One lens on the back means you are holding an iPhone 17e or an iPhone Air.
It can, and this is the question worth asking on this model specifically. The iPhone 17 is the first non-Pro iPhone with an always-on lock screen, Apple ships it enabled, and the clock and widgets hold the same pixels for hours at a stretch. On OLED that is how burn-in begins.
Find out before you grade the phone. Settings, Display & Brightness, turn Always On off. Open a blank white image at full brightness and stare at the top strip and the area around the Dynamic Island. A gray clock shape or a dull band there is burn-in. Against any other background it hides completely.
Burn-in means Faulty. So does a display someone has replaced, and the giveaway for that is the Always On row being absent from Display & Brightness altogether, because every genuine iPhone 17 panel has it. Both still sell here. Grading a ghosted screen as Good is what gets the number rewritten at inspection.
Yes, and this is the row people are surprised by. A crack or a chip anywhere, front glass, back glass or a camera lens cover, puts the phone in Faulty. Faulty on a 256GB is $153 and on a 512GB it is $177. Pick Faulty when you quote, send it in, and the figure does not move.
Then it grades Faulty, however clean the rest of the phone looks. Same answer if the phone is showing a service battery message. Settings, Battery, Battery Health & Charging tells you in one line. At 80 percent or higher the battery has no effect on your grade at all, so read the number rather than guessing from how the phone feels by teatime.
Good is light wear you cannot see when the phone is at arm's length. Average is light wear you cannot feel with a fingernail. Fair is heavy wear you can feel, with nothing cracked or chipped. Flawless means no marks at all, and Brand New means sealed and never activated.
Two tests settle it. Drag a fingernail slowly across the screen and along the edges of the frame, then hold the phone out under a bright light and turn it. Anything that catches the nail is at least Fair. Anything that cracks or chips is Faulty regardless of how tidy the rest of it is.
Not for money, and here is the honest reason. A phone with no power cannot be switched on, so we cannot confirm what is inside it and you cannot clear your own data off it. Neither of us should be comfortable with that, so we do not price it. What we will do is take it anyway. No, not while there is a balance running. A phone on a carrier installment plan or a lease is still under a financial obligation, and we do not purchase devices under financial obligations. Finish the payments, own it outright, and then it quotes exactly like any other iPhone 17.
No. Every grade on this page, right down to Faulty, needs a clean ESN behind it. A phone reported lost or stolen, blocked by its carrier, or sitting on a blacklist fails that check and we have to send it back. The same goes for one still signed in to an Apple Account, because we cannot sign it out of an account that is not ours. Clear both before you post it and the sale goes through without a phone call.
The shape of the deal is different, so read both before you choose. A carrier trade-in is bill credit. It usually needs a new line or a new phone on a plan, and the credit arrives in monthly slices across two or three years, which means leaving early leaves the rest of it behind. A Buyback is one payment for the phone, with nothing attached to it.
Our number does move with the carrier your phone is locked to, and not always by the same amount at every grade. Unlocked, AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon and Other each carry their own price, so choose the one your phone is actually locked to and the tool shows that figure rather than an estimate. No. A missing or damaged SIM tray does force Faulty on phones that were built with one, but a US iPhone 17 never had a tray to begin with. Run a finger down the left edge and feel nothing at all, and that is exactly right.
Imported phones are the exception. The A3520 and A3521 versions were sold with a nano-SIM tray, and on those the rule does bite, so check the edge before you choose your grade. Whichever one you have, move your eSIM across to your new phone before you erase this one, or ask your carrier to transfer the line for you.
A3258 is the US and Puerto Rico iPhone 17. A3519 covers Canada, Japan, Mexico, Guam, the US Virgin Islands and the Gulf states. A3520 is the rest of the world and A3521 is mainland China. Read it off the fine print on the back, or open Settings, General, About and tap the Model Number line to swap the part number for the A-number. Back up whatever you want to keep first, to iCloud or to a computer. Then open Settings, tap your name at the very top, scroll to the bottom and sign out. That is what switches Find My off, and it matters more than the erase itself. Now go to Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, and choose Erase All Content and Settings.
