People read that as a broken back and pick Faulty. Faulty is not a short list, it is a principle: anything that stops the phone being what it was when it left the factory. In practice that means a crack or a chip on the screen, the back or the lens cover. A battery under 80 percent, or a service battery message. A replaced or aftermarket screen. Burn-in. Face ID that no longer recognizes you. Engraving. A bent frame. Any audio fault, in the earpiece, the loudspeaker or a microphone. Any button that has stopped working. And if your 16e has a SIM tray at all, which US phones do not, it has to be there and undamaged. Missing magnets are on none of those lists, because that is how this phone left the factory.

Test it in thirty seconds. Hold any fridge magnet flat against the middle of the back. On a 16e it won't grip, and that result is normal. Now rest the phone face up in the center of a flat wireless pad. The battery icon should turn green, because Qi charging does work on this model.

Grade the 16e on wear alone. Run a fingernail over the screen, the back and the frame. Heavy wear you can feel is Fair, marks you can see but not feel are Average, and light wear invisible at arm's length is Good. The missing magnets change none of that.

Count the rear cameras. The 16e has one. The 16 has two, set in a vertical pill.

Then look at the top of the screen and the right edge. The 16e has a notch and only a power button. The 16 has the pill-shaped Dynamic Island and a Camera Control button below its power button. The 16e also only came in black and white.
