Yes, at the Faulty price, and this one catches people out. On this Air a single button does two jobs. It sleeps and wakes the screen, and it reads your fingerprint. Apple put the sensor inside the top button, so one dead part takes out both.

Test the button first. Press it once and the screen should sleep. Press again and it should wake. Then hold it down until the power-off slider appears. If any of that needs a second go, or a harder push, the button's on its way out.

Now test the sensor. Open Settings, then Touch ID and Passcode, and rest a finger you've already registered on the button. A tablet that knows your finger should open at once. If it asks you to set a fingerprint up from scratch, or won't read one it knows, the reader has gone.

Either result grades the tablet Faulty. A button that's stopped working does that on its own, and so does a fingerprint reader that won't read. One broken part can trip both rules at once. It's still a single Faulty price, not a double penalty.

Yes. A crack or a chip anywhere grades the tablet Faulty, including the camera cover. Faulty is a price in the grid, not a rejection. A battery under 80 percent gets the same answer.

That one we can't buy. A tablet that won't power up can't be tested, and your data can't be cleared off it either. Send it in and we'll recycle it free, or ship it back to you free.

Under 80 percent the tablet grades Faulty. Settings, then Battery, shows you the health figure on current software. Older software gives no figure, so judge it by how long a charge holds instead.

At 80 percent or higher, your grade is unaffected.

Early. Prices fall fastest in the weeks after Apple ships the next Air, and those launches have come in spring.

The drawer isn't free either. Batteries age on their own, and a tablet nobody charges still loses capacity.

Not sure which one you've got? Turn it over. Cellular tablets have a smooth antenna strip along the top of the back, and WiFi tablets don't. Settings, General, About also carries a cellular data line on Cellular models only.

No. We don't purchase devices under financial obligations. A tablet on an installment plan or a lease belongs to the finance company until the last payment clears. Once it's yours outright, we'll quote it.

No, and it's worth separating the two checks we run.

Activation Lock has to be off. Every iPad we buy needs that, WiFi or Cellular, with no exceptions. You turn it off by signing out of iCloud on the tablet. While it's on, nobody else can set the iPad up, so we can't buy it.

The IMEI has to be clean too, and only a Cellular tablet has an IMEI. WiFi models don't carry one, so there's nothing there to be blocked. On a Cellular iPad, an IMEI that's blacklisted, reported lost or stolen, or barred by a carrier stops the sale.

We check both when your tablet reaches us. Sign out of iCloud before you pack it, and ask your carrier to confirm the IMEI if the iPad ever sat on a plan.

No, hold on to them. Our price is for the tablet alone, and we can't pay for accessories.

That means the Apple Pencil, the Magic Keyboard, the Smart Folio, any case, the charger and the cable. Send the iPad by itself, packed so nothing leans on the screen.

Extras that arrive with it have to travel home in a second parcel, and that delays your payment. Your Pencil will also pair with whatever iPad you buy next.
