Newest of the big Airs, and the hardest to tell from the two before it. The iPad Air 13-inch (M2) and iPad Air 13-inch (M3) share this shell and these colors. A3461 and A3462 are the numbers that mean M4. The iPad Air 11-inch (M4) is this tablet on a smaller screen. Its own predecessors are the 11-inch (M3) and the 11-inch (M2).

Because they are two different transactions. A trade-in comes from Apple or a carrier, and it's tied to something you're buying from them. Most of it reaches you as credit.

Three of them now look exactly alike. The M2 came in 2024, the M3 in 2025, and this M4 in 2026. Same 13-inch screen, same aluminium, same four colors, same weight to the ounce. Nobody can pick one out by eye, and we don't expect you to.
Read the tablet instead. Open Settings, then General, then About, and look at the Model Name line. Current software spells the generation out for you there in plain words.
If your software's older, the Model Number line answers it too. Tap that line once and it switches to a short code starting with an A. A3461 is the WiFi M4 and A3462 is the Cellular M4. The same code is printed on the back in tiny grey text.
No tablet in front of you? Your order confirmation names the model, and Apple's coverage checker will name it from the serial number.
One more reason to look closely at a tablet this young. A replaced screen grades it Faulty, even when a shop fitted a genuine Apple part. Check the seam where the glass meets the frame. Factory glass sits flush all the way round. A lifted corner, visible glue or trapped dust means somebody's been inside.
Open Settings, then General, then iPad Storage. The bar at the top gives the total, and that total is your tier.
Apple counts a little differently to the label. A 256GB tablet reports somewhere near 245GB of space. Round up to the nearest size Apple sold. Those are 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB.
Storage picks your column in the grid. A guess here moves your number more than people expect.
Yes, at the Faulty price. Any crack or chip grades the tablet Faulty, front, back or camera cover. Faulty is a number in the grid, not a refusal. A battery under 80 percent goes the same way.
Not that one. A tablet with no power can't be tested, and we can't clear your data off it either. Send it in and we'll recycle it free, or mail it straight back to you free.
Under 80 percent the tablet grades Faulty. Settings, then Battery, shows you the health figure on current software. On older software there's no figure to find, so go by how long a charge lasts.
Anything from 80 percent up leaves your grade alone.

A tablet in a drawer keeps losing value quietly. The battery ages on its own, with no help from you.

If you're unsure, turn the tablet over. A Cellular model carries a smooth antenna strip across the top. A WiFi model doesn't. Settings, General, About lists a cellular data line on Cellular models only.
No. We don't purchase devices under financial obligations. That rules out anything on an installment plan, a lease, or a monthly upgrade programme. Settle it and we'll quote the tablet like any other.
No, and two different checks decide it.
Activation Lock has to be off. That applies to every iPad we buy, WiFi and Cellular alike, with nothing excused. Signing out of iCloud on the tablet clears it. Left on, the iPad can't be set up by anyone else, so we can't buy it.
The IMEI has to be clean as well, and that check only applies to Cellular tablets. A WiFi iPad doesn't have an IMEI, so there's nothing to check. On a Cellular iPad, a blacklisted IMEI ends it. So does one reported lost or stolen, or barred by a carrier.
Both happen at inspection. Sign out of iCloud before you send the tablet. If the iPad was ever on a plan, ask your carrier to confirm the IMEI.
Keep every one of them. We price the tablet on its own. Accessories add nothing, and we can't pay for them.
