The most a Sony Xperia 5 pays right now is $4. The bottom of our table is sitting at zero today, so the lowest grade is not paying anything at the moment. That is a small number and we are not going to dress it up. Sony sold very few of these in the US, and a 2019 phone that almost nobody carried is worth what the feed says it is worth.
Most people call it a trade-in. We call it a Buyback, and the price is different because a person opens the box and checks your phone by hand rather than a machine guessing at it.
The hard part with this phone is not the price. It is knowing which one you own. Sony has now shipped five phones called Xperia 5: this one, then the 5 II, the 5 III, the 5 IV and the 5 V. The Roman numerals are not printed anywhere on the phone, all five are the same tall narrow shape, and the quote you get belongs to whichever one you picked.
So read the model number instead of guessing. Open Settings, tap System, then About phone, and look at Model. You are on the right page if it says J8210, J8270, J9210 or J9260. Anything that starts with XQ is a later phone.
Two other ways to get at it. Dial *#06# and your IMEI comes up on the screen. Or slide the SIM tray out of the left edge with a fingernail, no pin needed, and read the label sitting inside the slot, because Sony prints the IMEI in there. That number is the one we run against the blacklist when your phone lands, so it is worth reading before you post it.
If the model comes back as something else, go to Xperia 5 II, Xperia 5 III, Xperia 5 IV or Xperia 5 V. Every one of those pays more than this one does.
Where to sell a used Xperia 5 really comes down to who still quotes one, and we do, working or broken. Shipping is free in both directions. If it will not power on we cannot buy it, because a phone with no power cannot be tested and your data cannot be cleared off it. We will recycle it for nothing instead, and it gets wiped either way.

Your Xperia 5 clears inspection within 48 hours of arriving. If it matches what you told us, payment leaves the same day by gift card, PayPal, bank transfer or check. Every phone gets a Department of Defense grade wipe, whether we buy it or recycle it.

J8210, J8270, J9210 and J9260 are the 2019 Xperia 5, this page. XQ-AS52, XQ-AS62 and XQ-AS72 are the Xperia 5 II. XQ-BQ52, XQ-BQ62 and XQ-BQ72 are the Xperia 5 III. XQ-CQ54, XQ-CQ62 and XQ-CQ72 are the Xperia 5 IV. XQ-DE54 and XQ-DE72 are the Xperia 5 V.
Three places, and they should all agree.
Settings, System, About phone shows the model. Dialing *#06# shows the IMEI. Sliding out the SIM tray, which comes away with a fingernail and needs no pin, shows a small label inside the slot with the IMEI printed on it.
The IMEI matters because that is the number we check against the lost, stolen and carrier blocked lists when the phone arrives. Reading it yourself first takes ten seconds and saves a surprise later.
Any crack or chip anywhere on the phone grades it Faulty, on the screen, on the back glass or on a lens cover, and it stays Faulty even if the phone works perfectly. On this model the Faulty row is not carrying a price today, so a cracked Xperia 5 is not worth the trip. Send it for free recycling instead and we will wipe it before it goes anywhere.
Run a fingernail across the screen and across the back. If it catches on anything, that counts as a scratch, even when you cannot see it in normal light. Marks you can see but cannot feel are lighter than that. We would rather you grade it hard and be pleasantly surprised than the other way around.
It does. The Xperia 5 has an OLED screen, and any burn-in makes it Faulty. Turn the brightness up, open a plain white image full screen, and look for a faint ghost of the clock, the battery icon or the on-screen buttons sitting in the picture. If you can see one, that is burn-in.
No. There is no battery percentage rule on an Android phone here, so do not go hunting for a battery health screen. We do not ask for a number. A battery that has genuinely stopped working is a different matter, because a phone that will not run unplugged is a phone with something not working, and that grades Faulty.
We cannot buy it. A phone with no power cannot be tested, and your data cannot be cleared off it, which is the part we will not skip. Free recycling is open to you instead. Post it on a free label, we run a Department of Defense grade wipe and dispose of it properly, or we send it back to you for nothing if you would rather have it.
Not while it is locked. A Google account lock, sometimes called FRP, stops anyone else setting the phone up, so we cannot buy a phone that arrives with one.
Clear it before you post. Sign out of your Google account, then open Settings, System, Reset options and choose to erase all data. Our erase your device page walks through it. We wipe every phone on arrival as well, but yours has to come off first.
No. Anything reported lost or stolen, or blocked by a carrier, fails the IMEI check and we have to turn it down. Dial *#06# and check yours before you post it, because a phone that fails comes straight back to you and neither of us gets anything out of the trip.
Not until it is settled. We do not purchase devices under financial obligations, which covers anything still on an installment plan or a lease. Pay it off, own it outright, then quote it here normally.
Nothing is required in the box. No charger, no cable, no case, no original packaging, and none of it adds to what you are paid. Do the opposite with the memory card: pull the SIM tray, take the card and the SIM out, and keep them. Photos on that card are yours, and our wipe covers the phone's own storage rather than a card sitting in the tray.
It is the same thing on our side, we just call it a Buyback. You pick a grade, we email a free label, a person checks the phone by hand, and we pay you the same day it clears. There is no store credit and no requirement to buy anything from us, which is the part that usually differs from a carrier.
Four ways, and you choose at checkout. Gift card is emailed and comes out around 3 percent ahead, because the brands add a bonus. PayPal is instant, with PayPal's own 2.99 percent fee taken off.
