Most people call it a trade-in. We call it a Buyback. The practical difference is that a person here opens the box, checks the phone by hand, and writes down what they found.
This is the model where the carrier question is worth real money, so it is worth a minute of your time. Unlocked is not about where you bought the phone. It is about whether the phone will work on somebody else's network. Sony sold the Xperia 5 V direct and unlocked in the US, and unlocked is what the table below prices.
Checking takes about a minute. Borrow a SIM from a friend on a different network, put it in the tray, and see whether the phone finds service. If it connects and makes a call, it is unlocked. If it refuses the SIM or asks for an unlock code, it is locked to the network it came from. Your carrier can also confirm it over the phone, and they have to unlock it for you once the phone is paid off and out of contract.
A locked Xperia 5 V is still something we buy, it just sits on its own price. Locked is not the same as blocked, and the difference matters. Locked to a network means a lower price. Reported lost or stolen, blocked by a carrier, or still signed in to a Google account means we cannot buy it at any grade. Those checks are further down the page.

A prepaid USPS label arrives by email. Sign out of your Google account, erase the phone, take the SIM and any memory card out of the tray, and pack it. The charger, the case and the box stay with you.
Your Xperia 5 V is checked by hand within 48 hours of arriving, and we tell you what we found. If it matches your description, payment leaves the same day by gift card, PayPal, bank transfer or check. Every phone gets a Department of Defense grade wipe.

SONY XPERIA 5 V BUYBACK QUESTIONS
Take the most common state a two year old phone is in: marks you can see under a lamp but cannot feel with a fingernail, which we grade Average. Unlocked, that is $120 for a 256GB and $110 for a 128GB. Heavier wear you can feel drops the 256GB to $72. Use the quote tool at the top of the page for your exact phone.
It means the phone is not tied to one network. An unlocked Xperia 5 V will take a SIM card from any carrier and get service. A locked one only works with the network that sold it, until that network unlocks it for you. Where you bought the phone is not the test, and neither is who you pay every month. The only thing that counts is whether another carrier's SIM works in it.
Borrow a SIM from someone on a different network and put it in the tray, which slides out of the left edge by hand. Turn the phone on and watch the signal bars. Service and a working call means unlocked. A message asking for an unlock code, or no service at all with a SIM that works fine in another phone, means locked.
If you have nobody to borrow from, call the carrier the phone came from and ask them outright. They will tell you, and once the phone is paid off they have to unlock it if you ask.

Be ready for a real difference. Unlocked is where the money is on this model, and some carrier options are not carrying a price at all today. That is not a judgment on your phone, it is what the feed pays right now, and the tool always shows the current number.
Count the lenses on the back. Two means Xperia 5 V. Three means Xperia 5 IV, which kept a separate telephoto lens that Sony dropped for this generation. To be certain, read Settings, System, About phone: XQ-DE is the 5 V and XQ-CQ is the 5 IV.
It does, at every grade. Sealed and unlocked, that is $150 for the 256GB against $140 for the 128GB, and the gap runs down the whole table. Settings, then Storage, shows which one you have.
Yes. Any crack or chip, on the screen, the back or a lens cover, grades the phone Faulty and keeps it there even if everything still works. Faulty is a price, not a refusal: unlocked, $24 for a 256GB and $22 for a 128GB. Pick Faulty when you quote and nothing changes when we open the box.
Flawless means no marks at all. Take the case off, clean the glass, and look at the screen, the back and the frame edges in daylight, tilting the phone as you go. One scuff on a corner and it is not Flawless. This is the strictest grade we have and most phones that have been carried without a case do not make it, which is fine, because Good and Average are where most people land.
Yes. The panel is OLED and burn-in makes the phone Faulty. On a 2023 phone it is uncommon, but check anyway: full brightness, plain white image on the whole screen, and look for a ghost of the status bar or the navigation buttons sitting in the white.
No. There is no battery percentage rule on any Android phone here, so nothing to look up and nothing to send. A battery that holds less than it did when new does not cost you anything. A battery that has failed, meaning the phone shuts down on its own or only runs plugged in, is a phone that is not working, and that is Faulty.
Not for a price. Without power we cannot test it and cannot clear your data off it, and we will not buy a phone we cannot wipe. Free recycling is the alternative: post it on a free label, it is wiped where possible and disposed of properly, or we send it back to you at no cost.
Sign out of your Google account. A phone that arrives still tied to one is FRP locked, nobody else can set it up, and it cannot be bought at any grade.

No on both counts.
Reported lost or stolen, or blocked by a carrier, fails the IMEI check when it lands and the phone comes back to you. Dial *#06# and read the number before you post it. This is different from being carrier locked, which is fine and simply prices lower.
A phone still on an installment plan or a lease is under a financial obligation, and we do not purchase devices under financial obligations. Clear it, own it, then quote it.
