Before you box this one up, open the SIM tray. The Xperia 5 II is one of the last flagship phones with a memory card slot, and Sony hid that slot in the same tray as the SIM. There is no pin. Turn the phone off, slide a fingernail into the notch on the left edge, and the tray drags straight out.
Two things live in there. Your nano SIM sits in the lower slot. The upper slot holds either a second SIM or a microSD card, and that card is the one people forget. Our wipe covers the phone's own storage. A memory card that arrives inside the tray is a card full of your photos riding along with a phone you no longer own, so take it out and keep it.
Then look at the tray itself before you push it back. It should be straight, with no cracked plastic around the lip, and it should sit flush with the edge when it goes home. A tray that is missing, snapped or sitting proud means the phone cannot hold a SIM properly, and a phone that cannot do its job grades Faulty no matter how clean the glass is. Slide it in, put the SIM back for a second, and check the signal bars come back.

We email you a prepaid USPS label. Sign out of your Google account, erase the phone, take the SIM and the memory card out of the tray, and slide the empty tray back in so it does not travel loose. Nothing else is required in the box.

Read the model line in Settings, System, About phone. XQ-AS means the Xperia 5 II. XQ-BQ means the Xperia 5 III, which pays more. Turn the phone off first, which is Sony's own instruction. Then find the notch on the left edge, get a fingernail under the lip and drag the tray straight out. No pin, no paperclip, no trip to the drawer to find the tool that came in the box. Push it back in the same way until it sits level with the frame.
It travels with the phone, which is not what you want. Our wipe is done to Department of Defense standards on the phone's own storage. A microSD card sitting in the tray is separate from that, and everything on it is yours: photos, videos, whatever you moved off the phone to free up space. Take the card out before you tape the box. Nothing else needs to go in it, so the charger, the case and the original packaging can stay with you too.
Yes, and it is worth being straight about why. The tray is part of the phone, not an accessory. Without one, or with a bent one that will not seat, the phone cannot hold a SIM card and cannot get on a network. That is something on the phone not working, and anything not working grades Faulty here, however good the screen looks. Grade it Faulty when you quote and the number you see is the number you get.
It does, at every grade, by roughly ten dollars. Sealed, the gap is $74 against $84. If you are not sure which one you have, open Settings, tap Storage, and read the total rather than the free space.
Yes, and it still pays. Any crack or chip, on the screen, on the back or on a lens cover, moves the phone to Faulty. That is a price, not a refusal: $12 for a 256GB and $10 for a 128GB. Pick Faulty at the quote step and nothing changes when it reaches us.
Good means light wear that nobody notices when you hand the phone over. Hold it at arm's length under normal room light and look at the screen and the back. If you cannot pick out any marks from there, it is Good. If you can see marks but a fingernail glides over them, that is Average. If your nail catches, that is Fair. A crack or a chip skips all of it and lands on Faulty.
It does. The screen is OLED, and OLED panels keep a faint ghost of anything that sits still for long enough. Burn-in grades the phone Faulty. To check, turn the brightness right up and put a plain white image on the full screen, then look for a shadow of the status bar across the top or the on-screen buttons across the bottom.
It is not a grade at all. We do not apply a battery percentage rule to Android phones, so there is no figure to go and find and no health screen to photograph. The only way a battery reaches your quote is by failing outright, and a phone that will not stay on away from a charger counts as not working, which is Faulty.
No, and the reason is practical rather than fussy. With no power we cannot test the phone and we cannot clear your data off it, and we are not going to buy a phone we cannot wipe. Send it in for free recycling instead. We wipe what we can, dispose of it properly, and you pay nothing either way.
Yes, and this one stops the sale dead if you skip it. A phone still tied to a Google account carries an FRP lock, nobody else can set it up, and we cannot buy it.
