Apple removed it. Every iPhone 14 sold in the United States is eSIM only, and it was the first iPhone here to ship with no tray at all. Look along the left edge under the volume buttons and you will find a flat, unbroken piece of aluminum.

It is good news for your grade. A missing or damaged SIM tray forces a phone to Faulty on our rules. Your US iPhone 14 never had one, so there is nothing for that rule to catch. The empty edge takes nothing off your Buyback price and you should not grade yourself down for it.

One exception. An iPhone 14 bought outside the US does have a nano-SIM tray, and on that phone the rule works normally. If the tray is gone, bent or stuck, it grades Faulty.

They look almost identical. Both are 6.1 inches, both have a notch, both have two lenses sitting on a diagonal. The left edge is what separates them. An iPhone 13 has a SIM tray with a pinhole next to it. A US iPhone 14 has neither.

Quote a 13 as a 14 and the number changes when we open the box, which is a slow way to find out. Ten seconds on the left edge saves that.

Open Settings, tap General, then About. Look for Model Number and tap it once. It switches from the part number to the A-number. A2649 is the US iPhone 14, eSIM only, no tray. A2882 is the version sold in most other countries and it has a nano-SIM tray. Both are an iPhone 14 and both quote on this page at the same price. The only difference that matters is whether the tray rule can apply to you.

Transfer your phone number first, before you erase anything. Start the transfer from your new iPhone, or ring your carrier and ask them to do it. Getting a number back after it has been cut loose is the most annoying part of this whole process, and it is completely avoidable.

Yes, and you can see the price before you commit. Any crack or chip puts the phone in Faulty, whether it is on the front glass, the back glass or one of the lens covers. There is no size where a crack stops counting. Faulty on a 128GB is $51, on a 256GB it is $62, and on a 512GB it is $84.

Choose Faulty at the quote step and nothing changes later. Send us a cracked phone graded as Good and it does.

Then it grades Faulty, however clean the rest of it looks. Settings, Battery, Battery Health and Charging shows you Maximum Capacity as a percentage. Anything from 80 up leaves your grade alone. Below 80, or a Service Battery message on that screen, and the phone drops to the Faulty row. This one catches people on a 2022 phone, so check it before you pick a grade rather than after.

Face ID that no longer opens the phone grades it Faulty. Test it now: lock the iPhone 14, pick it up and look at it. If it will not open, or Settings shows a Face ID error, that is the answer. The usual cause on this model is a replaced screen, because a display swapped outside Apple's repair system often kills the sensor array. A replaced display is its own Faulty rule too, so one bad repair can trip both.

Hold the phone at arm's length and look at it in decent light. If nothing jumps out, that is Good. It is the grade most three year old iPhones in a case land on.

Below that, Average is light wear you cannot feel when you drag a fingernail over it. Fair is heavy wear you can feel, with no cracks or chips anywhere. Flawless means no marks at all, and Brand New means sealed, never switched on, with everything in the box.

Grade it the way you would describe it to somebody buying it from you. A real person holds your phone at our end, so an honest grade sails through.

That is one we have to turn down. A dead phone cannot be tested, and more to the point your photos and accounts cannot be cleared off it, so we will not put a price on something we cannot open. Post it to us anyway if you want it gone: recycling it costs you nothing, it is wiped to Department of Defense standards on arrival, and it goes to a proper processor rather than a landfill. Not while there is a balance on it. A phone still running through a carrier installment plan or a lease is under a financial obligation, and those are not devices we can buy. Settle it, own the phone outright, then bring it back and it quotes like any other iPhone 14.

No, and this one has no workaround. A clean ESN is a condition of every grade on this page, Brand New down to Faulty. Reported lost, reported stolen, blacklisted or blocked by a carrier all fail that check.

Activation Lock is the other half. If the phone is still signed in to an Apple Account when it gets here, we cannot buy it, because it is not really yours to hand over yet. Signing out of iCloud before you post it is what clears that.

Take the carrier part first. Which network the phone answers to does move your Buyback price, and not by the same amount at every grade, which is why we quote Unlocked, AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon separately rather than showing one price and hoping. Pick the carrier your phone is really locked to and the tool shows that line. The table on this page is the unlocked one, where Good 128GB sits at $170.

Now the comparison. A carrier trade-in takes the phone against a new one and hands the value back as bill credit spread over 24 or 36 months, tied to a plan you have to keep. A Buyback is a straight sale. Money arrives, no line to open, nothing to sign up for, and you can spend it on anything. Color makes no difference to either, by the way. Midnight, Starlight, Blue, Purple, Yellow and (PRODUCT)RED all pay the same.

Copy anything you want to keep to iCloud or a computer first. Then sign out of iCloud, which is the step that switches Find My off and releases Activation Lock. Then go to Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, and Erase All Content and Settings. It will ask for your Apple Account password, and typing it is what actually releases the phone for the next owner.
