Two steps, and you need a dim room for both. Bright light hides it completely, which is why so many owners have no idea theirs has it.

First, turn the brightness up and fill the screen with plain white. A new empty note works, or any white image. Look at the top of the screen where the clock sits, and at the row directly underneath where the Lock Screen widgets go. Burn-in appears as a faint gray outline of those numbers, or a dim panel where a widget used to be. It does not move when you tilt the phone, because it is not a reflection.

Second, prove it. Open Settings, Display & Brightness, then Always On, and turn it off. Lock the phone, wake it and repeat the white screen test. A ghost that survives that is burnt into the panel. A ghost that vanishes was never damage in the first place.

Yes, at the Faulty price. Screen burn-in is on our list of things that force Faulty, alongside cracks and a battery under 80 percent, and there is no version of it that is mild enough to ignore. Faulty pays $86 at 128GB, $95 at 256GB, $104 at 512GB and $110 at 1TB.

We will not sugar-coat the drop. A Flawless 256GB is $365 and the burnt-in one is $95. A damaged panel is the single most expensive thing that can be wrong with this phone, because replacing it costs us most of what the phone is worth.

Quote it as Faulty and that number is yours. Quote it as Flawless and we will find it, because checking the panel is the first thing we do on a 14 Pro.

It will not undo anything, if that is what you are hoping. Burn-in is permanent once it is there. Turning Always On off is useful as a test, and it is worth doing on any 14 Pro you plan to keep for another year, because it stops the damage getting worse. For a phone you are selling this week it makes no difference to the grade or the price. Test with it, then quote honestly.

Count the lenses on the back. Three means Pro. Two means the standard iPhone 14, which has its own page and its own prices.

Two more tells if you want them. The Pro has the Dynamic Island, the black pill that floats away from the top edge and stretches when something is playing, where the standard 14 has a fixed notch. And the Pro's edges are polished stainless steel that reflects like a mirror, while the 14 has matte aluminum. Only the Pro has the always-on display, which is also why only the Pro has the burn-in problem.

Look at the left edge above the volume buttons. An iPhone 15 Pro has the Action button there, a small rocker that replaced the mute switch. The iPhone 14 Pro still has the flick-up, flick-down mute switch. That is the quickest test there is.

Yes. Any crack or chip means Faulty, whether it is the front glass, the back glass or one of the three lens covers, and the size of it is irrelevant. A cracked 512GB pays $104 and a cracked 1TB pays $110.

For everything short of a crack, the ladder runs like this. Flawless is no marks at all. Good is wear you cannot see at arm's length. Average is light wear you cannot feel with a fingernail. Fair is heavy wear you can feel, still with no cracks. Pick the one you would use describing the phone to a friend.

Under 80 percent, the phone grades Faulty. Settings, Battery, Battery Health and Charging shows Maximum Capacity, and a Service Battery message on that same screen means the same thing. Above 80 it changes nothing at all. Worth knowing that the always-on display is hard on the battery as well as the panel, so 14 Pros that have run it since 2022 often sit lower than their owners expect. Check the number rather than guessing from how long it lasts.

Face ID that no longer opens the phone forces Faulty. Lock it, lift it, look at it, and see whether it opens. If Settings shows an error in the Face ID section, that is the same answer. The usual cause is a display replaced outside Apple, which is its own Faulty rule as well, so a bad repair can trigger both at once. On a 14 Pro a third-party panel is also more likely to be the one carrying burn-in, so test the screen at the same time.

That is one we have to say no to. Without power there is no way to check the screen, the battery or Face ID, and no way to clear your accounts and photos off the phone. Buying it blind is not something we will do. Send it in anyway if you want it dealt with: recycling is free, we wipe it to Department of Defense standards first, and it goes to a licensed processor. If you would rather keep it, we mail it back for nothing.

No, not until it is cleared. A phone with a balance running on a carrier installment plan or a lease sits under a financial obligation, and those we cannot purchase. Once the last payment goes through and the phone is properly yours, bring it back and it quotes like any other iPhone 14 Pro.

No. Every grade on this page, from Brand New to Faulty, needs a clean ESN behind it. Reported lost, reported stolen, blacklisted or blocked by a carrier all fail, and it is not something we can lift at our end.

The Apple Account side is fixable and it is on you to fix it. A phone still signed in to iCloud when it lands here cannot be bought, because Activation Lock ties it to somebody else. Signing out before you post it clears that in about a minute.

They are different deals. If your carrier has offered you a trade-in on an iPhone 14 Pro, read what it actually is. That value normally comes back as bill credit spread across 24 or 36 months, and it disappears if you switch networks. What we do is buy the phone. Which network the phone is locked to does move our number, though.
