Carrier matters here, and not the way the old rule of thumb says. Unlocked is never beaten on this model. AT&T is the one carrier that matches it, cell for cell, at every capacity and every grade. T-Mobile, Verizon and the rest all pay less than unlocked.
There is one situation where the answer is no, and it is worth understanding before you box anything up: a Pro Max with a screen that shows nothing at all.
Not a cracked screen. Cracked is fine, cracked is a price. What stops us is a display giving out no light and taking no touch, because that phone cannot be tested and, more to the point, your data cannot be taken off it. Signing in, erasing, checking Face ID and the battery all need a screen you can see and tap. Pay for a phone we cannot open and we are guessing at what is inside, and so are you.
So find out which one you have. Charge it for fifteen minutes, then take it into a dark room. Hold the side button and tilt the screen so you are looking across it rather than at it. Any faint glow, even a gray wash at one edge, means the display is alive and broken rather than dead. Next, swipe slowly up from the bottom edge and feel for the small tap the phone gives back. Then call it from another phone and listen. Light, vibration or sound all say the same thing.
A phone that glows, buzzes or rings is one we buy, at the Faulty price, and that is the bottom row of the table, one number for each capacity. A phone that does none of the three is one we cannot pay for. Send it anyway and we will recycle it for free or post it back to you for free, and either way it gets wiped to Department of Defense standards on the bench before it goes anywhere.

Yes, for most carriers. Unlocked is the top price and nothing beats it. AT&T draws level with it: a Good 1TB pays $345 unlocked and $345 on AT&T, the same number, and that holds at every grade and every capacity.
T-Mobile, Verizon and the other networks all come in under the unlocked figure. So there is no carrier that pays you more than unlocked on this phone. Select the carrier your Pro Max is really locked to and let the tool work it out. That is also what we verify at inspection, so guessing high does not help you.
It is a Faulty grade with a real number behind it, from $83 for a 128GB to $104 for a 1TB. Cracked glass, dead pixels, lines across the panel and a display you can barely read all land in the same grade.
The important part is that it still lights up and still takes a touch. That keeps it in the buying pile. Tape over the cracks before you post it so nothing sheds in transit.
That one is a judgement call and it goes on whether the display can be used, not on whether the phone has power. Ringing tells us the logic board is alive. It does not let anyone sign out of an Apple Account or run an erase.
If there is any glow in a dark room and the swipe up from the bottom edge produces a taptic bump, the screen is usable enough and we buy it as Faulty. If the panel is dead black and ignores every touch, we cannot buy it, because we would be paying for a phone we cannot clear your personal data from. Free recycling and a free return are both open to you instead.
No, and the reason is the same one. Nothing can be tested and nothing can be erased. Try a wall charger for half an hour first, since a completely flat battery on a 1TB Pro Max can take a while to show any sign of life. If it stays dead, send it to us and pick free recycling or a free return, and it gets wiped either way.
Size is the whole answer. The Pro Max screen is 6.7 inches and the iPhone 13 Pro is 6.1. The Pro Max is also noticeably heavier in the hand. If the phone will not power on and you cannot check Settings, measure the body: the Pro Max is about 160mm tall against roughly 147mm for the Pro. Otherwise open Settings, General, About and read Model Name.

Yes, it makes the phone Faulty. The panel is OLED, and OLED holds a ghost of anything that sat in one place for long enough. Keyboards, the status bar and navigation buttons from an app you used every day are the usual culprits.
Open a blank white note, turn the brightness up and look at the screen from a slight angle. Faint gray shapes that stay put as you scroll are burn-in. It is easy to miss on a busy home screen and obvious on white.
Fair is heavy wear you can feel. Deep scratches your fingernail catches on, worn corners, rails scuffed back to bare metal. It can look rough and still be Fair. The line between Fair and Faulty is not how bad it looks, it is whether anything is cracked or chipped. No cracks means Fair, however tired the phone is. One chip in any piece of glass means Faulty.
That makes it Faulty, and a service battery message does the same. The reading is in Settings, Battery, Battery Health and Charging. At 80 percent or above it does nothing to the grade. The Pro Max has the biggest battery in the family, so plenty of them are still above the line, but a 2021 phone is worth checking rather than assuming.
No. If a carrier installment plan or a lease is still running, the phone is under a financial obligation and cannot be bought here. That is not a credit check on you, it is that the phone is not fully yours to sell yet. Pay it off, then come back.
No. A clean ESN is required for every grade, Faulty included. Lost or stolen reports, carrier blocks over unpaid bills and an Apple Account still signed in each stop the sale on their own. The last of those you can clear yourself in Settings before shipping, and it is the single most common reason a phone gets sent back.
Take a backup, since this cannot be undone. Sign out of your Apple Account in Settings, which releases Find My, then choose Erase All Content and Settings. The phone has to reach us with Find My switched off. Screen by screen instructions are on our erasure guides page.
If the display is too broken to do any of that, say so in the quote and send it anyway. Every device that arrives here gets a Department of Defense grade wipe, including the ones that go for recycling.
