They are two different deals. A trade-in is what a carrier or a retailer runs. They apply the tablet to something else you're buying, usually as bill credit over 24 or 36 months.

They look alike from across a table. The two sit on different price grids, so this is worth two minutes of your time.

The tell is how the tablet signs you in. Every iPad Pro uses Face ID. It carries no fingerprint reader at all. The iPad Air uses Touch ID, built into the top button. No iPad has both.

Here's the test. Open Settings and read the security row in the list. Face ID and Passcode means you have a Pro. Touch ID and Passcode means you have an Air. Now rest a finger on the top button. Nothing happens on a Pro, because there's no reader under it.

While you're in there, check that Face ID still works. Tap Face ID and Passcode, then try it on your own face. A tablet you've used for months already knows you. If it offers to set Face ID up from scratch, the sensor is gone.

Broken Face ID grades the iPad Faulty. That's a real price in the grid on this page, so you still get paid. Quoting it as Good is what makes the number change once we check it. If the row says Touch ID, price your tablet on our iPad Air page instead.

Yes. A crack or a chip anywhere grades the iPad Faulty. Screen, back, camera glass, it all counts the same.

Faulty is a real number in the grid, not a refusal. A bent frame, a replaced screen, an engraving or a dead button also grade Faulty.

That one we can't buy. A tablet with no power can't be tested, and your data can't be cleared. We won't pay for something we can't check.

Post it to us anyway if you'd rather not keep it. We'll recycle it free, or mail it straight back to you free.

Under 80 percent grades the iPad Faulty. We still buy it, and Faulty is a real price on this page. Settings, then Battery, shows you the health figure on current software.

A worn battery isn't the same as an iPad that won't turn on. We buy the worn one. We can't buy one with no power.

Early. Tablet prices fall hardest in the weeks after Apple shows a new iPad. Holding on for a better moment usually costs you money.

The drawer costs you as well. A battery ages whether the iPad gets used or not. Under 80 percent, the tablet grades Faulty.

It does, and the gap is set by the grade rather than by the size: it is the same on a 256GB as it is on a 2TB. Around 30 dollars at Brand New, Flawless and Good, 28 or 29 at Average, 18 at Fair and 9 at Faulty. Not sure which you own? Turn the iPad over and look at the top edge. Cellular models have a plastic antenna strip there. WiFi models are plain aluminum all the way across. Settings is the other check, because only a Cellular iPad lists Cellular Data.

No. There are two requirements here, and they cover different things.

Activation Lock has to be off. Every iPad Pro 11-inch (M5) has to clear that one, WiFi or Cellular. Sign out of iCloud in Settings, or remove the tablet from your Apple account at icloud.com/find. We can't buy an iPad that arrives still signed in.

The IMEI has to be clean. Only Cellular models carry one, because a WiFi iPad has no IMEI at all. We can't buy a tablet that's blacklisted, reported lost or stolen, or blocked by a carrier.

So a Cellular iPad can pass on Activation Lock and fail on the IMEI. Your carrier can check that number for you before you mail anything.

Back up to iCloud or to a computer first. Sign out of iCloud so Find My turns off. Then erase the iPad in Settings. Our Device Erasure Guides walk you through it.

Please don't. We pay for the tablet alone. Pencils, Magic Keyboards, folios and cases aren't priced in, so we can't pay for any of them.

Strip the iPad down before you box it. Take the case off, lift the Pencil off the magnetic edge, and leave your charger and cable at home.

Brand New is the exception, because that grade means a sealed box. Everything Apple put in there stays where it is.

Good means light wear you can't see from arm's length. Hold the tablet at reading distance under a lamp. If nothing shows, Good is your grade.

Average means light wear you can't feel with a fingernail. Run a nail slowly across the back and the edges. If it catches, you're at Fair. Fair is heavy wear you can feel, with no cracks and no chips.

Flawless means no marks at all. Brand New means sealed and never opened.

Any crack or chip is Faulty, wherever it sits. So is a bent frame, an engraving, screen burn-in, or a battery under 80 percent. Faulty is a price here, not a refusal.

We pay via gift card, PayPal, bank transfer, or check. Gift cards average about 3 percent more, because brands add bonuses. PayPal is instant and carries PayPal's 2.99 percent fee. Bank transfers take 2 to 4 days. Checks take 3 to 5.
