A phone worth this much usually goes one of two other ways, and both of them leave something open behind you. A network's offer is not finished when you hand the phone over. It arrives in pieces and it keeps depending on you for years. A private sale is not finished either, because it ends with a stranger who has your number, and if the battery gives up two weeks later you will hear about it. A Buyback closes. We check the iPhone 11 Pro Max within 48 hours of it reaching us, the money goes out the same day, and that is the end of it for both of us. On a phone at this price that is worth nearly as much as the number is.
First, make sure you are on the right page. Every year somebody sells us an iPhone XS Max believing it is this phone, and the mistake costs them real money. The two are almost the same object. Both are 6.5 inches. Both have an OLED screen, a stainless steel band and glass front and back. Held face up, in a case, they are hard to tell apart at all.
Turn the phone over and count the lenses. Three is an iPhone 11 Pro Max. Two is an XS Max. That is the whole test, and it never fails. The three sit in a triangle inside a large raised square of glass that takes up most of the top left corner. The two on an XS Max sit in a narrow vertical pill about half that size. If the phone is switched on, there is a second check that takes five seconds: open the Camera app and look for the 0.5x button. The 11 Pro Max has an ultra wide lens and shows one. The XS Max never had that lens and never shows the button.
That third lens is also the thing most likely to cost you a grade, which is why it is worth understanding rather than only counting. Apple gave each camera on this phone its own sapphire cover, so going from two lenses to three added a third piece of exposed glass sitting proud of the back. A crack or a chip in any lens cover is Faulty in our grading, exactly like a cracked screen. Drag a fingernail slowly across all three covers. A chip catches. A scratch in the coating does not, and that is only wear. Do it now, because on a 256GB the fall from the Good row to the Faulty row is about seventy percent of the money, and both figures are in the table below.
One more thing about that screen, since it is OLED. Burn-in forces Faulty on this phone, the same as on the iPhone 11 Pro, whose page carries the full walkthrough for spotting it. The base iPhone 11 is the exception in this family, because its screen is an LCD and an LCD cannot burn in at all. Same year, same chip, three phones, and the panel is what decides whether that rule applies to you.
Storage barely matters here, which surprises people. On a lot of iPhones the capacity swings the price hard. On the iPhone 11 Pro Max the whole distance from the smallest to the largest is about a sixth, at any grade you pick, while the distance from the top of a column to the bottom of the same column is more than three quarters. If you have been putting off selling because you only bought the small one, that was never the thing holding your number down.
Carrier does move it, and in the same order at every grade and every capacity. Unlocked pays the most, Verizon comes closest, then AT&T, then T-Mobile, and anything else sits well under all four. Pick the network the phone is really locked to rather than reading across from the unlocked grid. Cracked, worn, dead battery, burned in, all of it still has a price. The only one we cannot pay for is a phone that will not power on, since we cannot test it or clear your data off it, and that one gets free recycling or a free trip back to you.

HOW IT WORKS
Confirm it really is the Pro Max by counting three rear lenses, then pick 64GB, 256GB or 512GB, set your carrier and choose a grade. Run a nail over the lens covers and check Maximum Capacity under Settings, Battery, Battery Health and Charging while you are there. Both take seconds and both can change the grade. Your Buyback price is then fixed for 14 days.
The prepaid USPS label arrives by email once you accept the offer. Sign out of iCloud and erase the handset before you seal the box, because a phone that turns up still signed in has to go back to you unpaid. The charger, cable and original packaging can stay where they are.
We inspect the phone within 48 hours of it landing, screen and all three cameras included. Matching what you told us means payment leaves that same day, as a gift card, PayPal, a bank transfer or a check. Anything that reaches our bench gets a Department of Defense grade wipe, bought or recycled, no exceptions.

Condition first, then carrier, then capacity. An unlocked 512GB with no marks on it, graded Flawless, is $200. The same size with ordinary wear, graded Average, is $157. A 64GB with a cracked back still pays $47. Put your own combination through the quote tool at the top of the page.
Count the rear cameras. Three lenses means iPhone 11 Pro Max. Two means iPhone XS Max, a different phone with its own page and its own prices. Nothing else is needed, because Apple never sold a two camera 11 Pro Max or a three camera XS Max.
If you want to be doubly sure, three more tells. The 11 Pro Max carries its cameras in a large raised square of glass; the XS Max has a small vertical pill. The 11 Pro Max back is frosted and matte; the XS Max is glossy. And midnight green only ever existed on the 11 Pro Max.
The model number settles any remaining doubt. A2161 is the US iPhone 11 Pro Max. A1921 is the US iPhone XS Max. Getting this right matters, because the newer phone is worth meaningfully more, and quoting the wrong one means a corrected offer later.
It does. Each of the three cameras sits under its own sapphire cover, and a crack or a chip in any one of them is Faulty, treated exactly like a cracked screen. It feels harsh for something the size of a lentil, but that glass is part of the phone's glass.
Test it properly rather than squinting at it. Drag a fingernail slowly across each cover in turn. A chip catches your nail. A scratch in the coating, or the light hazing that a few years in a pocket gives every camera, does not catch and is graded as ordinary wear.
This is the fault this phone gets more than the phone before it did, because it has three covers where the XS Max had two, and they stand proud of the back rather than sitting flush. The gap it makes is real: $160 for a Good 256GB against $48 once it grades Faulty.
Both have three cameras, so counting will not help you here. Go by size. The Pro Max screen is 6.5 inches and the iPhone 11 Pro is 5.8, a difference you can see the moment they are side by side and feel the moment one is in your hand. The Pro Max is also noticeably heavier. On paper, A2161 is the US Pro Max and A2160 is the US Pro. The Max is the more valuable of the two.
Yes. This is an OLED panel, and burn-in grades the phone Faulty with no middle option. What you are looking for is a faint permanent ghost of something that used to sit still on screen, most often the bar across the top holding the clock and the battery, or the keyboard. Yes. Any crack or chip, on the screen, the back or a lens cover, means Faulty, and Faulty is a paid row: $48 on a 256GB, $54 on a 512GB. Choose Faulty at the quote step and the figure stands when it arrives. The single case we cannot buy is a phone damaged so badly that nothing appears on the display at all, because then it cannot be tested and your data cannot be removed. We recycle those free of charge instead.
Less than you would think. Between a Good 64GB at $155 and a Good 512GB at $180 there is not much in it, and the pattern holds down the table. Condition is doing nearly all the work on this model.
Check anyway rather than guessing, since people misremember. Settings, General, About, and read the Capacity line. It shows a little under the number on the box, so 512GB reads as roughly 500GB. That is normal and not a fault.
Below 80 percent it is Faulty, and we buy it anyway. Find the number in Settings, Battery, Battery Health and Charging, on the Maximum Capacity line. Eighty or above and your grade is decided by wear alone. Below, or a message saying the battery needs servicing, and it belongs in the Faulty row. Worth checking first on a phone this age, because it catches more iPhone 11 Pro Max sellers than cracked glass does.
Broken Face ID is Faulty. Test it rather than guessing, because people assume the worst from one bad morning. Settings, Face ID and Passcode, Reset Face ID, then enroll your face again. If the scan completes, nothing is wrong. If it will not enroll or the phone says the feature is unavailable, pick Faulty. There is no reduced grade between working and not working here.
Not for cash. We cannot power it up, cannot test it and cannot wipe your data from it, so there is nothing we could responsibly pay for. Leave it on a wall charger with a cable you know works for a good half hour before you decide, since a completely drained 2019 battery often shows nothing for a long time. If it stays dark, send it in anyway. We will recycle it at no charge, or ship it back to you at no charge, and it is wiped to Department of Defense standards on arrival either way.
A carrier trade-in is credit against your bill, released month by month across a new two or three year agreement, and it evaporates if you leave early. A Buyback is a purchase. The money is sent to you the day the phone passes inspection and it is not attached to anything.
The network does move our figure too. Unlocked sits at the top of every row. Verizon comes closest to it, AT&T next, and T-Mobile lowest of the four. As a live example, a Good 512GB unlocked is $180, while the same phone on a network is somewhere below that depending on which one.
Pick the network the phone is genuinely locked to, not the one whose SIM happens to be in it. If you are unsure, Settings, General, About, and look for No SIM restrictions, which is how an unlocked iPhone reports itself.
No. While there are payments outstanding, whether that is a carrier installment plan or a lease, the phone is under a financial obligation and we do not buy those. Clear the balance so it is fully yours and it quotes here like any other iPhone 11 Pro Max, at the prices in the table above.
No. Every grade on this page, Faulty included, needs a clean ESN behind it. Phones reported lost or stolen, barred by a carrier, or still attached to an Apple Account do not pass, and they have to be returned. The Apple Account side is in your hands and takes five minutes to fix by signing out and erasing. A blacklisted IMEI is not fixable at all, so if you bought this phone secondhand, get the IMEI checked before you ship it rather than after.
Back up anything you care about first. Then Settings, your name at the top, scroll down, Sign Out. That is what switches Find My off. Then Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Erase All Content and Settings, and put in your Apple Account password when prompted.
