Storage, connectivity and the state of the glass and the aluminum decide where your own tablet sits between them, and every step is printed in the table below.
Worth saying plainly on a tablet this old: your real competition is not Apple and it is not a carrier, it is whoever else in the house might use it. An iPad 8 still opens a browser, still plays a film, still runs the homework app, and a machine that does all of that is usually worth more on a kid's bed than it is worth in cash. If somebody will use it, keep it. A Buyback is for the other case, the one where the iPad has stopped being anybody's tablet and is quietly turning into a paperweight with a screen. The iPad 8 has a lookalike on each side. The iPad 7 came before it and the iPad 9 came after. All three are the same 10.2-inch slab with a round Home button, a Lightning port, a headphone jack and an aluminum back.
An iPad 9 at least shows its hand. It has a True Tone switch in Settings and it came in 64GB or 256GB. Between an iPad 7 and an iPad 8 there is nothing to find. Same three colors, same 32GB and 128GB, same screen, same small front camera, same size. Nothing in Settings names the chip.
The A-number on the back is the only proof that exists. A2270 means an iPad 8 on WiFi. Read A2197, A2200 or A2198 instead and you have an iPad 7. Read A2602 or A2604 and you have an iPad 9.
So turn your iPad over. While it is face down, look at the back panel properly, because the back panel sets your grade as well as your model. A chip or a crack in the aluminum grades an iPad 8 Faulty. So does an engraving. Engravings turn up on this model more than on any other iPad, because the base iPad was the school tablet and the birthday present, and Apple put names on them for free.
A WiFi + Cellular iPad 8 beats a WiFi one at every point on the grid, and the gap is widest on the small one: a sealed 32GB with a SIM tray is worth $15 more than the same tablet without one, against $5 on the 128GB. The narrowest gap anywhere is $2. The table below is WiFi. Check the right edge of your iPad, and if there is a SIM tray in it, quote the Cellular version instead.
Where to sell an iPad 8 really comes down to who still quotes them. We still do, used or broken. We cannot buy an iPad 8 that will not power on, but we recycle it free and wipe it to DoD standards on the way through. Postage is free either way.

You cannot tell an iPad 8 from an iPad 7 from the outside. The two tablets share a screen size, a body, a Home button, a Lightning port, a headphone jack, three colors and both storage sizes. Even the front camera is the same.

Turn the iPad over and read the small gray print at the bottom of the aluminum. A2270 is the WiFi only iPad 8. A2428, A2429 and A2430 are the three WiFi + Cellular versions sold in different regions. All four numbers quote on this page, and all four are an iPad 8.
An engraving grades an iPad 8 Faulty, whatever it says and however neat it is. It costs more than people expect. Apple engraved these for free, and plenty of school and gift iPads went out with a name on them, so this comes up often on the iPad 8. An engraving cannot be polished off. Quote it as Faulty and the price you see is the price you are paid.
Yes, at the Faulty price. A crack or a chip anywhere counts: front glass, aluminum back or camera lens. A dent with a sharp edge to it counts too. A 32GB iPad 8 in that state pays $7 and a 128GB pays $12. Select Faulty when you quote and nothing changes at our end.
A Home button or Touch ID that has stopped working grades an iPad 8 Faulty. The button has to click and Touch ID has to read your finger. Either one failing on its own is enough. Test both before you quote. Press the button a few times, then lock the iPad 8 and open it again with your thumb.
A battery under 80% grades an iPad 8 Faulty. A service battery message does the same. On a tablet this age that is common, so check rather than assume. Settings, then Battery, shows you the health figure on current software.
If your iPad 8 is on older software there is no percentage on it to read, and then you go by how it behaves. A battery that will not see out an afternoon off the charger, or that falls off a cliff at 20 or 30 percent, or an iPad that only stays awake while it is plugged in, is below the line. Choosing Faulty upfront means the quote and the payment match.
Yes, and at 32GB the difference is worth chasing. A sealed 32GB Cellular iPad 8 pays $15 more than the WiFi version, and the gap holds up across the other grades too. The table above shows WiFi prices only. If there is a SIM tray on the right edge, quote your iPad 8 as WiFi + Cellular.
A Cellular iPad 8 has one extra requirement: the IMEI has to be clean, because a Cellular iPad carries an IMEI like a phone. Settings, General, About shows you the number. A WiFi iPad 8 has no IMEI, so there is nothing to check. Which network your iPad 8 was on makes no difference either way, because an iPad is not carrier locked.
They are different offers. An Apple trade-in gives you credit toward something new from Apple, and a carrier trade-in normally lands as bill credit spread over 24 or 36 months. Both are tied to buying something else.

Activation Lock has to be off. Every iPad 8 has Activation Lock, WiFi and Cellular alike, and signing out of iCloud is what clears it. Skip that step and the tablet reaches us unusable and gets posted straight back.
A blacklist is an IMEI matter, so it only applies to a WiFi + Cellular iPad 8. Anything reported lost or stolen, or blocked by a carrier, fails that check and we have to decline it. A WiFi iPad 8 has no IMEI, so there is nothing to check.
Open Settings, tap General, then Transfer or Reset iPad, then Erase All Content and Settings. It asks for your Apple Account password, and that password is what switches Activation Lock off. Keep the Apple Pencil, the keyboard and the case. Accessories are not priced into the quote, so they add nothing to your payout, and things that travel loose in a box tend to go missing. The charging cable can stay home too.
