A Sony Xperia 1 V pays between $78 and $483. This is the newest phone on this part of the site and the numbers show it. The distance between those two ends is big enough that a minute of checking is worth your time.
Most people call this a trade-in. We call it a Buyback. The difference is that our number comes from a person here with the phone in their hands.
Almost everyone checks a phone the same way. Screen first, then the back, then the corners if they are being thorough. Turn the Xperia 1 V over and look at something else: the three circles running down the back. Those are lens covers, and they are glass.
Under the top one is the largest camera sensor Sony has ever fitted to an Xperia, a 48MP Exmor T measuring one over one point three five of an inch. All three covers stand slightly proud of the back panel, which means they meet a hard floor before the rest of the phone does.
The shape of this phone makes that worse. The Xperia 1 V is 165mm tall and only 71mm across. A phone that narrow does not land flat when it goes. It tips off the edge of a table and comes down on a corner or on its side, and the camera cluster sits right there.
So run a fingernail across each of the three circles, slowly. A scratch will let your nail glide over it. A chip will catch. That difference decides the grade, because a crack or a chip on a lens cover is broken glass on the phone, and broken glass anywhere puts it in Faulty, even with a screen you could sell as new.
Faulty is a price here rather than a door closing. A damaged Xperia 1 V is still worth real money, the figure is printed in the table below, and it does not change after the phone reaches us. What we ask is that you pick that row yourself instead of hoping we look past it.
Two sizes exist, 256GB and 512GB, and the larger one pays more at every grade. Settings, then Storage, tells you which you have. Sony sold the Xperia 1 V unlocked and direct in the US, and Unlocked is the option that pays here.

A prepaid USPS label comes by email. Remove your Google account from the phone before you erase it, because that order is what clears the factory reset lock and the other way round can leave it stuck. Take out the SIM and the memory card and put the empty tray back in. Nothing else needs to come with it.

Storage and condition between them decide it. A 512GB Xperia 1 V with no marks anywhere is $460 today. The same phone at 256GB is $440. Light wear you cannot feel takes the 512GB to $385. Take the case off, get under a decent light, and run a fingernail slowly across each of the three glass circles on the back, then around the metal ring that surrounds them. You are separating two things. A scratch is a line in the surface and your nail slides straight over it. A chip is missing glass, and your nail stops dead on the edge of it. Tilt the phone while you look, because a hairline crack in a lens cover disappears when the light is straight on. This takes half a minute and it is the check almost nobody does.
Yes. Our rule on damage is about the glass rather than the function: any crack or chip anywhere on the phone puts it in Faulty, and a lens cover is part of the phone. It does not matter that photos still come out fine. It is the one rule people push back on most, so we would rather state it plainly than have it come as a surprise. The number is not nothing either. A chipped 256GB pays $78 and a 512GB pays $82.
Yes, and it lands in the same row as a chipped lens cover. Cracked screen, cracked back, chipped corner or damaged lens glass, they all grade Faulty and they all pay $78 at 256GB or $82 at 512GB. Pick that grade on the form, send the phone in, and the quote stands. We are not going to talk you down over damage you already told us about.
Shape. At 165mm tall and 71mm wide the Xperia 1 V is unusually long and narrow for its size, so when it slides off a table it rarely lands flat on its back. It goes over onto a corner or an edge, and the camera cluster sits close to one of those corners with its lens covers standing slightly above the surrounding panel. That combination means the first point of contact is often a lens cover rather than the frame. It is worth knowing before you grade, and worth a case if you are keeping it.
Settings, About phone settles it: XQ-DQ62 is the Xperia 1 V and XQ-CT62 is the Xperia 1 IV, which has its own page and different prices. Without opening settings, use the zoom. On the 1 IV the telephoto slides through every focal length between 85mm and 125mm. On the 1 V it steps between the two rather than sliding. The 1 V also has a visibly larger main camera opening, because Sony put a much bigger sensor behind it.
Yes, at every grade, though the gap is smaller than people expect. Sealed it is $483 against $462. In light wear it is $385 against $367. Check the size in Settings, Storage, and go by the total the phone reports rather than by how much room is left.
No, and there is no percentage rule to look up. We do not ask for a battery health figure on this phone and we do not grade against one. Two or three years of charging shows on every battery. What matters is whether it works: if the phone cuts out while there is charge left, or only runs with a cable plugged into it, then a part of it has stopped working and that is what moves it to Faulty.
It does, and it puts the phone in Faulty. The Xperia 1 V has an OLED panel, and OLED panels hold a faint print of anything that sat still on them long enough. Because the screen is 21:9, black bars park above and below almost every video you watch, which gives the panel more static content than most phones get. Check it with a plain white image at full brightness, then a plain gray one, and look for the clock, the status icons or two faint horizontal bands.
A carrier pays in bill credit spread over two or three years, and you keep collecting only while you stay with them. We pay you once, in money, and then we are done. Sony sells in the US directly rather than through carrier stores, so most carriers do not list the Xperia 1 V at all and cannot quote it. Ours is usually the only number available.
Unlocked for nearly everybody who owns one of these. Sony sold this phone direct and unlocked, and Unlocked is the option that pays here. If you are unsure, drop another network's SIM in and try to make a call, or search your phone settings for network lock. Choose what the phone is, take the number the form returns, and that is your Buyback price.
Not until that comes off. The factory reset lock stops anyone else setting the phone up, so there is no grade we can buy it at while it is active. Remove the Google account first, then erase the phone. If you already erased it and it is now asking for an account, sign back in with that account, remove it properly, and erase again. Phones that are blacklisted, reported lost or stolen, or blocked by a carrier are declined the same way and posted back to you free.
Not while money is owed on it. A phone on an installment plan or a lease is under a financial obligation, and we do not purchase devices under financial obligations. Clear the balance, wait for the account to close, then quote it here. Nothing else in the process changes.
Every color pays the same, so the finish makes no difference at all. Accessories make no difference either. The charger, the cable, the case, the box and any screen protector are not priced into what we pay, so keep them. Take your memory card out, because it and everything on it belongs to you. Leave the empty SIM tray in the phone though, since a missing tray is a fault we have to grade.
