A Sony Xperia 1 IV pays between $42 and $281. Which end of that you land on is set by the storage size and by how the phone has been treated, and there is one part of this particular phone worth checking before you decide.
Most people call this a trade-in. We call it a Buyback, and the difference is that a person here opens the box, tests the phone and tells you what they found.
Turn the Xperia 1 IV over. The longest of the three lenses is a telephoto that physically moves. Sony put a genuine continuous optical zoom in this phone, 85mm to 125mm and every focal length in between, driven by a small motor sliding glass along a track inside the body. No other phone maker has shipped one before or since.
It is the most interesting thing about the Xperia 1 IV and it is also a moving part in a device that otherwise has almost none. Moving parts wear out and they get damaged by drops that leave no mark at all.
So test it. Open the camera, switch to the telephoto, and drag the zoom slider slowly from one end to the other and back. It should travel smoothly, hold focus the whole way, and give you a sharp picture at 85mm, somewhere in the middle, and at 125mm. If the picture jumps rather than glides, if it sticks at a point, if it will not focus at one end, or if you hear a grinding from inside, the zoom has failed.
A failed zoom puts the phone in Faulty. Any part of an Android phone that does not work grades it Faulty here, and that holds even when the glass is spotless and the phone looks like it left the shop last week. This is the one fault on an Xperia 1 IV that a photograph will never show, which is why we would rather you found it than we did.
There are two sizes, 256GB and 512GB, and the larger one pays more at every grade. Settings, then Storage, tells you which is yours. Sony sold the Xperia 1 IV unlocked and direct in the US, and Unlocked is the option that pays here.

We email you a prepaid USPS label. Take your Google account off the phone, then erase it, because doing it that way round is what clears the factory reset lock. Slide out the tray, take your SIM and memory card, and put the empty tray back. Chargers, cases and boxes stay home. They are not priced in.

Open the camera, tap through to the telephoto, and drag the zoom slider slowly from 85mm out to 125mm and back again, twice. Watch for three things. The picture should scale smoothly instead of jumping between steps. It should stay in focus while it moves. And it should give you a sharp shot at both ends and in the middle. Listen too, with the room quiet, for grinding or a repeated click from inside the phone. Any of those failures means the zoom mechanism is not doing its job, and that grades the phone Faulty even though nothing about it looks wrong.
Good is light wear that is invisible at arm's length. Hold the phone out the way you would hand it to somebody. If you cannot pick out any marks from there, and closer up the marks are faint, it is Good. If your fingernail cannot feel them but you can see them close up, that is Average. Everything in Good has to work, including the zoom, the shutter button and both speakers. A crack or a chip anywhere overrides all of this and puts the phone in Faulty.
The zoom answers it. Slide the telephoto zoom on this one and the picture glides through every focal length between 85mm and 125mm. On the Xperia 1 V the telephoto steps between two positions rather than sliding. The certain check is Settings, About phone. Yes, and the number is on the table before you commit to anything: $106 for a 256GB and $126 for a 512GB. Any crack or chip, on the screen, on the back glass or over a camera lens, puts the phone in that row. Choose it honestly on the form and the quote you accepted is the amount that gets paid.
That is Fair. The test is your fingernail rather than your eyes. Drag it across the back and around the frame, and if it drops into the scratches or catches on the scuffed corners, the wear is deep enough to count. Fair still requires everything to work and no cracks or chips anywhere. If your nail glides over marks you can only see in strong light, you are above Fair and the quote tool will show you the difference.
No. There is no battery percentage rule on this phone, we do not quote a number, and we are not going to send you looking for a battery health screen. Every three or four year old phone has a battery that has lost something. It only matters if it has stopped working: a phone that shuts down with charge showing, or that needs the cable in it to stay alive, has a part that no longer does its job, and that is what puts it in Faulty.
It does, and it grades the phone Faulty. The Xperia 1 IV has an OLED panel and OLED panels keep a shadow of anything that stayed put long enough. The 21:9 screen shape makes it more likely than usual here, because the black bars above and below a video never move. Check with a plain white image at full brightness and then a plain gray one, looking for the clock, the status icons or two horizontal bands. If you can see them, pick Faulty.
Carriers pay in bill credit spread over 24 or 36 months and you have to stay on their network to collect all of it. We pay you once, in cash, and the relationship ends there. Unlocked, almost certainly. Sony sold this phone direct and unlocked in the US, and Unlocked is the option that pays here. If you want to be sure before you quote, put a different network's SIM in and try to make a call, or search your settings for network lock. Pick what the phone actually is, not what network you happen to use.
Not until that account comes off. A phone with the factory reset lock active cannot be set up by anybody else, so there is no grade we can buy it at. Remove the Google account first, then erase the phone. If you wiped it already and it is now demanding an account you have forgotten, sign in with that account, take it off the phone, and wipe it again. Phones that are blacklisted, reported lost or stolen, or blocked by a carrier get declined the same way and go back to you free.
