The OnePlus 9 sold in North America is built from two materials that behave nothing like each other, and knowing which is which is worth real money to you. The front and back are glass. The rail running around the outside is plastic. That is not a criticism of the phone, it is how OnePlus built this one, and the 9 Pro next to it got a metal rail instead.
It matters because the two damage differently. Plastic scuffs, scratches and takes small dents, and none of that breaks anything. Wear you can feel with a fingernail is Fair. Heavy scuffing on a plastic rail is still Fair. Glass does not scuff, it chips, and any chip anywhere on this phone sends it to the bottom grade no matter how well it works. So run a fingernail around the rail first, then hold the back under a lamp and tilt it until the light rakes across. Scuffs on the rail, keep your grade. A bright speck or a step in the glass, be honest and take the drop.
That plastic rail is also the fastest way to tell a 9 from a 9 Pro without opening Settings. Tap the side of each and the plastic one sounds dull and feels warm. Beyond that, the usual questions: where to sell a OnePlus 9, what a used one is worth, whether we take broken ones. We do. If it will not power on we cannot buy it, but recycling it is free and the wipe happens either way.

Your phone is inspected within 48 hours of arriving, by a person, in our building. If it matches your description the money leaves that day by gift card, PayPal, bank transfer or check. Every phone gets a Department of Defense wipe, whether we buy it or recycle it.

No, and this is the most common way a OnePlus 9 owner gives away money. The rail on the North American 9 is plastic, and plastic wears. Scratches, scuffs, worn corners, small dents, shiny patches where it has rubbed in a pocket, all of that is wear. Wear you can feel with a fingernail is Fair. Wear you cannot feel is Average. None of it is Faulty. Faulty is for cracks, chips and things that have stopped working, and a plastic rail cannot crack the way glass does.
Take the case off, hold the phone under a single bright lamp, and tilt it slowly so the light rakes across the back rather than shining straight down. Flat light hides chips and raking light finds them. What you are looking for is a bright speck, a small crescent near a corner, or a place where a fingernail run across the glass stops on a step. Any of those is a chip, and a chip in the glass sends the phone to Faulty even if it works perfectly and even if the case has been covering it for four years. Do the same pass around the camera surround and each lens cover.
Three ways to tell. Feel the side rail: the 9 is plastic and sounds dull when tapped, the OnePlus 9 Pro has a metal one. Look at the screen from the side: the 9 is flat, the Pro curves down both long edges. Check the size: 6.55 inches against 6.7. Yes, and Faulty is a row with a real number in it rather than a refusal: $9 at 128GB and $11 at 256GB. That grade also covers a chipped lens cover, a bent frame and a display that has already been swapped for an aftermarket part. Pick Faulty when you quote and the figure you saw is the figure you are paid.
Straight answer: at the Faulty end this is a small amount of money and we are not going to dress it up. What makes it worth doing anyway is that the label costs you nothing, the return costs you nothing, and a phone in a drawer loses a little more value every month it sits there. The worst outcome is that you change your mind and we mail it back for free.
Light wear you cannot pick out from arm's length under normal light. A step up, Flawless means no marks at all, which a cased OnePlus 9 can genuinely still be. A step down, Average means light wear your fingernail cannot feel, and Fair means heavier wear you can feel with no cracks and no chips anywhere. Torn between two? Take the lower one and you will never be caught out.
Burn-in grades Faulty. The panel is AMOLED, so anything that sat still for years, usually the status bar or the navigation area, can leave a ghost. Open a plain white image at high brightness and look across the panel, then repeat on a plain gray one because faint burn-in shows on gray before it shows on white. A dead line or a permanently stuck patch lands in the same grade.
Only if it has genuinely failed. There is no percentage rule on Android phones here and no battery health screen worth hunting for. A phone that shuts off at 30 percent, or only runs while plugged in, has a part that no longer works, and that is Faulty. A battery that is simply shorter than it used to be is not.
Compare the two properly, because the shape matters as much as the number. A carrier usually pays in bill credit spread over 24 or 36 months and tied to keeping a line open, so you collect it slowly or not at all. Two separate stops. Money owed on an installment plan or a lease means the phone is under a financial obligation, and we do not purchase devices under financial obligations. Clear the balance and quote it normally. A Google account or FRP lock means nobody but you can set the phone up, so we cannot buy it at any grade. Reported lost or stolen, blacklisted and carrier blocked all end the same way.
We cannot price it. A phone with no power cannot be tested and your data cannot be cleared off it, and buying something we cannot check is not something we do. Free recycling is the alternative, with the same Department of Defense wipe as everything else, or we post it back to you at no cost.
Account off first, reset second. Settings, tap your account at the top, remove the Google account, then Settings, System, Reset options, Erase all data.
