On a Fold5, grade the hinge first. It is the one part that can be perfect to look at and still cost you two hundred dollars, because a Samsung phone with any functionality issue grades Faulty, and a hinge is a working part like a button or a speaker.
The Fold5 is the generation where Samsung got the phone to shut flat. Look at the numbers Samsung published: for the Fold2, Fold3 and Fold4 it quoted two folded thicknesses, one at the hinge and a thinner one at the open end, because those phones sat slightly wedged when closed. For the Fold5 there is one figure, 13.4 mm, all the way along. That gives you a test nobody could run on the older ones.
Close the phone and set it on a table. Crouch down so your eye is level with the closed edge and look along it. You want one even line from top to bottom. A wedge, a lift at one corner, or a gap you could slide a card into means the hinge is no longer pulling the two halves together, and that is Faulty.
Three more, all with your hands. Open it slowly and listen: a soft sound is normal, grinding or a gritty catch is not. Stop it at a right angle and let go, because a healthy Fold5 stays exactly where you left it and a failing one flops open or snaps shut. Then run a fingertip along the hinge spine feeling for sand, because the Fold5 is rated IPX8 for water and carries no dust rating at all, so pocket grit is the thing that kills these.
One thing that is not a fault, before you talk yourself into a lower grade: the crease down the middle of the inner screen. Samsung calls it a normal characteristic of the folding design. It is not damage and we do not price it.

Your prepaid USPS label arrives by email. Sign out of your Google account, then erase the phone from Settings so the FRP lock is gone. Close it, wrap it so the hinge is not taking the weight of anything, and box it. Nothing else needs to come with it.
Someone here opens and closes your Fold5 by hand, checks both panels, and finishes within 48 hours of the parcel arriving. If it matches your description the payment goes out that day, by gift card, PayPal, bank transfer or check. Every phone is wiped to Department of Defense standards either way.

Four checks, none of them needing tools.
One, close the phone, put it on a flat table and look along the closed edge with your eye at table height. It should be a single even line. Two, open it slowly and listen for grinding or a gritty catch, which is different from the soft sound a healthy hinge makes. Three, open it to a right angle and take your hands off. It should stay there. Four, run a fingertip along the hinge spine and feel for sand or grit packed into it.
Pass all four and the hinge is fine. Fail any of them and the phone is Faulty, because on a Samsung phone anything that has stopped working properly takes the grade to the bottom regardless of how the glass looks.
Yes. The Fold5 was built to shut flat, which is why Samsung quotes a single folded thickness of 13.4 mm for it instead of the two figures it quoted for the Fold4. If yours sits wedged, lifts at one corner, or leaves a gap along the open edge, the hinge is no longer doing its job and the phone grades Faulty. A whisper of daylight right at the outer corners is not what we mean. A visible wedge is.
Some sound is normal on a Fold and Samsung says as much in its own care guidance. What we are listening for is grinding, crunching or a catch partway through the swing, which usually means grit has got into the mechanism. That is a functionality issue and it grades Faulty. If it is just a quiet mechanical sound and the phone opens smoothly and holds its angle, carry on and grade it on the cosmetics.
It can change it a lot. A Fold5 hinge should hold whatever angle you set, which is the whole point of standing the phone up to take a photo. One that is so stiff you need two hands and real force, or so loose that it drops open on its own, has failed, and a failed hinge is Faulty. There is no half way grade for it. That is why the difference between a working hinge and a broken one on a 512GB is the gap between the Average row and the Faulty row in the table.
Yes. Cracks and chips anywhere, inner panel, cover screen, back or lens covers, all grade Faulty, and Faulty is a price rather than a rejection. A cracked 256GB pays $28 and a cracked 1TB pays $32. Pick Faulty when you quote and post it as it is.
No. Every Fold has a crease and Samsung describes it as a normal characteristic of the folding design rather than a defect. It does not lower your grade here.
Light wear you can see but cannot feel. Drag a fingernail slowly over the cover screen, the back and the frame. If it glides over the marks, you are in Average. If it catches in them, that is heavier wear and you are into Fair, which is still a real number on this phone. Cracks, chips, burn-in and anything that has stopped working sit outside this scale entirely and go to Faulty.
Shut it and look at the edge. A Fold5 closes flat. A Fold4 leaves a visible teardrop gap between the two halves near the open end, and that gap is normal on a Fold4, not damage. It is rated IPX8 for water, which covers immersion, and it has no dust rating at all. Water damage still matters to your grade, because it usually shows up as something that has stopped working, and that is Faulty. The bigger practical risk on this phone is dust rather than water. Sand and pocket grit have nowhere to be stopped and they end up in the hinge, which is exactly the failure the tests further up this page are looking for.
Both. The 7.6-inch inner panel and the 6.2-inch cover panel are both OLED, and burn-in on either one grades Faulty. Turn the brightness up, open a plain white image, and look across each screen at an angle in a dim room. A faint clock, keyboard or navigation bar printed into the white is burn-in. Owners almost always check the big screen and forget the small one, which on a Fold5 is the screen that has been on the most.
No. That rule belongs to iPhones and it does not apply here. Samsung phones have no battery percentage rule at all and no health screen to read, so there is nothing to check and nothing to prove. A battery that has genuinely failed is caught by the same rule as everything else, because a phone that does not work is Faulty.
