The Galaxy Z Flip5 5G was the generation where Samsung redesigned the hinge. The new Flex hinge let the phone close flat, which is why a Flip5 shuts with almost no gap while a Galaxy Z Flip4 sits open in a wedge. Good change. But it came with two side effects that Samsung states plainly on its own support pages, and both of them look exactly like damage.
First, the crease is more visible. Samsung's words: it is normal for the crease on the Galaxy Z Flip5 to appear slightly larger compared to previous models because of the new hinge technology. So if your Flip5's line looks deeper than your friend's older Flip, that is the design, not wear, and not something you did. The crease is not damage on any foldable. Samsung calls it a normal characteristic of a device designed with a flexible display that does not affect the display's quality, lifespan or performance. Do not choose Faulty over it.
Second, the hinge feels looser. Samsung again: compared with previous Z series models, the hinge on the Galaxy Z Flip5 may feel slightly loose while opening and closing, because of the new hinge's smoother motion. A smoother, lighter action is not a worn hinge.
So what does a worn hinge look like? Test it, do not guess. Open the phone slowly and stop it at about halfway. It should hold that angle with nothing supporting it. If it drops shut on its own or pushes itself the rest of the way open, that is worn, and worn is a functionality issue, which on a Samsung means Faulty. Then open it fully, lay it on a table, and check the two halves are level and do not rock. Close it and look along the edge. A Flip5 should meet almost flush. A clear gap on this generation is worth flagging.
For what it is worth, Samsung rates this hinge for over 200,000 folds on average, so most Flip5s coming to us have a hinge that is fine. It is worth the two minutes anyway.
The rest of the grading is short. Any crack or chip is Faulty, and on a foldable that means the inner screen too, plus the cover screen, the back and the lens covers. An inner screen is still a screen. Burn-in on either panel is Faulty. Anything else that has stopped working, a speaker, a button, a camera, the charging port, is Faulty as well, because the rule is a principle rather than a checklist.

A person here opens it, works through it by hand within 48 hours of arrival, and tells you what we found. If it matches, the money leaves the same day by gift card, PayPal, bank transfer or check. Every phone gets a Department of Defense grade wipe when it lands, including the ones we recycle.

Here is the test that actually decides it. Open the phone slowly and stop around halfway. A hinge that is fine holds that angle on its own. One that has worn out lets the phone fall shut, or springs it open. That is a functionality issue, and on a Samsung any functionality issue is Faulty.
Two more. Open it flat on a table and check the halves sit level with no step and no rocking. Fold it shut and look down the edge. This generation closes almost flush, so an obvious gap is worth taking seriously. And a faint click as it moves is normal, Samsung says the metal parts do that.
Samsung rates the Flex hinge on this generation for over 200,000 folding and unfolding cycles on average. Open and close it fifty times a day and that is more than ten years of use. So a Galaxy Z Flip5 5G with a hinge that has genuinely failed is the exception, not the rule. Test yours rather than assuming either way, because the grade turns on it.

Yes. A crack or a chip puts it in Faulty, and Faulty is a price rather than a no. It applies wherever the damage is: the inner folding screen, the 3.4 inch cover screen, the back, or a camera lens cover. A cracked 256GB pays $29 and a cracked 512GB pays $32. Pick Faulty when you quote and that is the figure we pay.
Yes, burn-in is Faulty on a Samsung, and both of this phone's OLED panels count. Put a plain white image full screen on the 3.4 inch cover display, look at it in a dim room from a slight angle, then do the same on the inner screen. A ghosted clock, a faint status bar, an outline of a keyboard, anything still visible through the white is burn-in. Either panel is enough.
No. Samsung phones have no 80 percent battery rule with us, and there is no battery health screen to hunt for. A three year old Flip whose battery is tired is not automatically Faulty. It only becomes Faulty if the battery has actually stopped doing its job, and at that point the general rule catches it like anything else that does not work.
Your fingernail decides it. Drag it slowly across the frame, the lid and the back. If it glides over the marks, that is Average, light wear you can see but cannot feel. If it catches, you are in Fair, which is heavy wear you can feel with no cracks or chips anywhere. On a Flip the frame at the hinge end and the outer edge of the lid are where the wear shows up first, so start there. Anything cracked, chipped or broken skips both and lands on Faulty.
Yes, and it gets its own price. Choose your network in the quote box rather than picking Unlocked, because carrier prices do not always match the unlocked numbers in the table above. A network lock is not a problem. A phone that is blacklisted, reported lost or stolen, or blocked by a carrier over an unpaid bill is a different matter, and those we cannot buy.
