Because the first digit of the name is the tier, not the year. A25 means entry tier, fifth generation. A54 means the tier above, fourth generation. The A25 is the newer phone and the A54 is the better specified one, and the used market pays for the second thing.

It is the single most confusing thing about Samsung's naming, and it works the other way too: the Galaxy A71 has the biggest number on our A series pages and is the oldest phone of the group.

Check the bottom edge for a headphone socket. The A25 has a 3.5 mm jack and the A26 does not. If you want to be sure, Settings then About phone gives you the model number: SM-A256U or SM-A256U1 is an A25, SM-A266U or SM-A266U1 is an A26. They look alike and they are not worth the same, so check before you quote.

Use your fingernail, not your eyes. Flawless has no marks at all. Good has light wear that vanishes at arm's length. Average has marks you can see close up but cannot feel when you drag a nail over them. Fair has wear deep enough to catch that nail, with no cracks or chips. One crack or one chip anywhere and it is Faulty, however good the rest of it looks.

Yes. A cracked A25 pays $23, and it is a price rather than a refusal. Cracks and chips are absolute here: front glass, back, or a camera lens cover, any of them puts the phone in Faulty even when everything still works. Pick Faulty at the quote step and the number does not change when we open the box.

It does, and this is the Samsung rule that surprises people most. Any part that has stopped working makes the phone Faulty. Not a small deduction, the bottom row. That covers the side key reader, the charging port, a speaker, a camera, a button that no longer clicks. Test them all before you pick a grade, because a phone that looks new and has one dead part is still Faulty here.

Nothing at all, in most cases. There is no battery percentage rule on Samsung phones, so ignore anything you have read about an 80 percent cutoff, that is an Apple rule and it does not apply here. Your A25 has a 5,000 mAh battery that is bigger than most and it will have faded. Faded is fine. Only a battery that has genuinely failed, one that will not take a charge or drops the phone dead mid afternoon, counts, and it counts because it is a part that stopped working.

It does. The A25 has a Super AMOLED screen and AMOLED panels can hold a faint permanent image of whatever sat in one place for months. That is Faulty. Put a plain white image on screen at full brightness and look for a ghosted keyboard or navigation bar. We do, at a different price. Pick your carrier in the quote tool and read the number it returns, because the table on this page is the unlocked one. A lot of A25s were bought outright at full price rather than on a plan, and those are usually already unlocked. If yours came from a carrier and the account is settled, ask them to release it first.

Then we cannot buy it. Anything on an installment plan or a lease still has someone else's claim on it, and we do not purchase devices under financial obligations. The carrier will give you a payoff figure on request. Once it is settled the phone quotes normally.

All three are a no, at every grade, and none of them are things we can work around. FRP is the common one: reset the phone without removing your Google account first and it locks itself to you, which makes it useless to the next owner. Remove the account, switch off Find My Mobile, then reset.

A Knox counter that has been tripped by rooting or custom firmware never resets, and a phone reported lost or stolen or blocked by a carrier fails the IMEI check. Those we have to turn down and send back to you, free.

Not for money. A phone that will not start cannot be tested and your data cannot be cleared from it, so we will not price it. Free recycling is the offer instead, and it is a real one: the same prepaid label, a Department of Defense wipe if the storage can still be reached, and proper disposal. Or we post it back to you at no cost.

Sometimes on paper, rarely in practice. Carrier offers on an entry level phone tend to be bill credit spread over two or three years and tied to a new line, so leaving early costs you the rest. Ours is one payment in cash, no strings. Take their number, take ours, and pick the bigger one. We would rather you compared than wondered.

Honest answer: only just, and only if you are realistic. The top of this page is $56 for a sealed one, and a well used A25 is in the twenties or thirties. That is a tank of gas, not a windfall. But the postage is free, the price is held for 14 days, and the alternative is a phone slowly losing what little it has left in a drawer. If it is broken beyond testing, take the free recycling and at least the data gets destroyed properly.
