Flawless means no marks at all. Good means light wear you cannot see from arm's length. Average means light wear you can see but cannot feel with a fingernail. Fair means heavy wear you can feel, with no cracks and no chips anywhere. Faulty means a crack, a chip, or something on the phone that no longer works. Brand New means sealed and never switched on.

Most six year old phones land on Average or Fair, and there is no shame in either. Picking honestly is what stops the price changing after we open the box.

By itself, no. There is no battery rule on any Android phone we buy. We do not ask for a percentage, we do not send you to a battery screen, and a Pixel 4 XL that needs a top up by 4pm grades exactly the same as one that does not. What does matter is a battery that has actually failed. If the phone powers off at random, or the charging port no longer takes a charge, that is a part that has stopped working and the phone grades Faulty. Charge it to full, unplug it and use it for an afternoon. Staying on is the whole test.

Yes. Any crack or chip, on the glass front or the glass back, grades the phone Faulty. That is a price, not a refusal. A 128GB in that state pays $5 and a 64GB pays $3. Choose Faulty when you quote and nothing changes when it reaches us.

The phone grades Faulty. Face unlock is the only way into a Pixel 4 XL, because Google left the fingerprint reader off this generation and never repeated that. So there is nothing behind it. A face unlock that no longer recognizes you is a part that has stopped working, and that is Faulty on any Android. Before you grade down, wipe the top bezel clean and enroll your face again. Grease across the infrared strip, or a screen protector cut too high, fails in exactly the same way as a dead sensor and costs nothing to fix.

Measure the screen corner to corner. The Pixel 4 XL is 6.3 inches, the Pixel 4 is 5.7. Both have the same wide forehead above the screen and the same square camera bump, so size is the only quick tell. The model number settles it: G020J, G020P and G020Q are all Pixel 4 XL. It does. This is an OLED panel, and burn-in grades the phone Faulty. Check it yourself in a dim room: turn the brightness up, open a plain white image full screen, and look for a faint ghost of the clock, the battery icon or the navigation bar sitting under the white. A stuck pixel on its own is not burn-in, and neither is color shifting when you tilt the phone. Both of those are normal. A shape that stays put wherever you scroll is the real thing.

We cannot buy that one, and the reason is practical rather than picky. A phone with no power cannot be tested, and your photos, messages and saved passwords cannot be cleared off it, so we will not put a price on something we cannot check. What we will do is recycle it free. Send it on a free label, we wipe it to Department of Defense standards and dispose of it properly. Ask for it back instead and the return is free too.

Not while there is a balance on it. A phone still sitting on an installment plan or a lease is under a financial obligation, and we do not purchase devices under financial obligations. Pay it off, own it outright, then quote it here normally.

Those we have to turn down at any grade. A Pixel still signed in to a Google account arrives with factory reset protection active, which means we cannot set it up or clear it, so we cannot buy it. Same answer for anything reported lost or stolen, blacklisted or blocked by a carrier. Sign out of your Google account and factory reset the phone before you post it, and none of this touches you.

Open Settings, tap System, then Reset options, then Erase all data. It asks for your screen lock, and it is worth removing your Google account under Settings, Passwords and accounts first, because that is what switches factory reset protection off.
