Most of it. The S Pen shipped with every Galaxy Tab S4, so we treat it as part of the tablet, and a Tab S4 that turns up without one grades Faulty however clean the rest of it looks. That is the difference between the top of the table and the bottom row.

It is worth a proper search rather than a shrug, because the Tab S4 gives the pen nowhere to live on the tablet itself. It does not clip on and there is no silo to push it into, so these pens end up in couch cushions, pencil cases and the loop inside a Book Cover. Buying a replacement pen off a marketplace to make the grade is usually not worth it at these prices, but finding the original always is.

Two minutes in a dim room. Turn the brightness most of the way up, open a plain white image full screen and hide the on-screen buttons, then look across the whole panel slowly.

On a Tab S4 the shapes to hunt for come from how these tablets were used. A media tablet that lived on video shows two faint darker bands, one near the top and one near the bottom, where the black bars of a widescreen film sat for years. A work tablet shows the row of status icons along the top. Either one is burn-in, and burn-in is Faulty. What is not burn-in: a patch that fades away after a second or two when the picture changes. That is an afterimage and it costs you nothing.

It depends what you find when you retest it. Wipe the dark window in the top bezel first, then delete your saved irises in Settings, Biometrics and security and register again in normal indoor light. Lock the tablet and try three times. Working again means nothing is wrong and it was a dirty window or an awkward angle. Refusing to register at all, or refusing to recognize you in a lit room, is a part that has stopped working, and that is Faulty. Sunglasses, direct sunlight and a cracked bezel window all defeat it for reasons that are not the scanner's fault, so rule those out first.

Yes, at the Faulty price. Any crack or chip anywhere, screen, back or camera glass, puts the tablet in Faulty regardless of how well it works. A 64GB in that state pays $3 and a 256GB pays $5. Pick Faulty at the quote step and nothing changes when it lands here.

Look at the back. A Galaxy Tab S6 has a long shallow groove down the back for the S Pen to sit in and charge. The Galaxy Tab S4 has a flat back with no groove, because its pen does not charge and has nowhere to attach. Model numbers confirm it: SM-T830 or SM-T835 is a Tab S4, SM-T860 or SM-T865 is a Tab S6. The other quick tell is the fingerprint reader. The Tab S6 has one under the glass. The Tab S4 has none at all.

There is no battery percentage rule on any Samsung tablet, and the Galaxy Tab S4 has no battery health screen to read anyway, so do not go looking for one. Seven year old batteries are shorter than they were and that on its own changes nothing. The line is whether the battery still works: a tablet that shuts down at 40 percent, or only stays alive plugged in, has a part that has stopped working, so it grades Faulty.

Use your fingernail rather than your eyes, because eyes are generous. Hold it at arm's length under a lamp. Nothing shows at all is Good. Marks you can see but your nail glides straight over are Average. Wear your nail drops into, on the aluminum back or around the edges, is Fair. Any crack or chip at all is Faulty, working or not. Most people grade themselves one step too kindly, which is why we say run the nail.

There is no carrier lock on a tablet, so a Tab S4 that lived on AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile quotes the same as one that never had a SIM in it.

Two other things do matter. Your Samsung account and your Google account both have to be signed out before it ships, because a Google account lock, an FRP lock or a tripped Knox counter means we cannot buy the tablet at any grade. And on a cellular Tab S4 the IMEI has to be clean, so nothing reported lost or stolen and nothing carrier blocked. A WiFi Tab S4 has no IMEI at all, so that check does not apply to it.

Order matters. Settings, tap your name at the top, sign out of the Samsung account. Then Settings, Accounts and backup, Manage accounts, remove the Google account. Then Settings, General management, Reset, Factory data reset. Doing the reset first can leave the tablet locked to an account you have already forgotten the password for. No, and that catches people out. A factory reset clears the tablet and leaves the memory card untouched, so your photos travel with it. The tray is on the edge and a paperclip opens it. Take the card out, keep it, and put the empty tray back in before the box goes shut. The card is worth nothing to us and something to you.

Keep them. Accessories are not priced into a Buyback, so the Book Cover Keyboard, a case, a screen protector or the wall plug add nothing to your number and only give things a chance to disappear in transit. One exception, and it is the important one: the S Pen goes in the box, because it came with the tablet in the first place.

Almost never on a tablet this old, and it is worth knowing why. Carrier offers on seven year old Android tablets are usually either nothing or a small bill credit tied to a new line for two or three years. A Buyback is money, once, with nothing attached to your account afterward. Get both figures if you like. On a Galaxy Tab S4 the comparison is usually short.

Leave it on a charger for an hour first, since old tablets go very flat. If it still will not start, we cannot buy it. With no power we cannot test it and your data cannot be cleared off it, and we will not put a price on something we cannot check.
