So far, Apple has released 38 iPhone models. That number continues rising as the years pass.
Prior to iOS 10.3, it wasn’t easy to figure out which iPhone you had. However, this was something that Apple addressed with later versions of their universal operating system.
For any devices more recent than the iPhone 5, and for any iPhone running iOS 10.3 or a more recent version, you should be able to learn which phone model you have easily enough. If you’re wondering how to tell iPhone model, we’re about to explain that in this easy-to-follow guide.
First Question: What iOS is Your iPhone Running?
Starting with the release of iOS 10.3 back in 2019, it has been easy to figure out your iOS.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap General.
- Select About.
You’ll see what version you’re running. Be sure to also take note of your model number. That will come in handy later.
How to Tell iPhone Model: iOS 10.3 or Later
iOS 10.3 didn’t have the most spectacular features, but it did have a few handy updates for users.
One helpful additional was the ability to quickly check what iPhone you had by going to Settings. To do this:
- Open the Settings app.
- At the top, you’ll see your Apple ID profile photo and your name. Tap it.
- Scroll down until you see your device. The first device will be your iPhone. You will see the name of your device. Select that.
- Under Device Info, you’ll see the Model.
That’s it. You now know your iPhone model!
How to Tell iPhone Model: iOS 10.2.1 or Earlier
Apple recently released version 16.4 of iOS. It is the most advanced and updated version of the company’s universal operating system.
Unfortunately, some older Apple devices are not able to receive that update, or several of the ones that came before it. If you’re trying to download version 16.4 of iOS, you will need at least an iPhone version 8, which came out in 2017.
If you haven’t upgraded to iOS 10.3 or have an iPhone that can’t update beyond iOS 9.3.5, you’ll need to find your iPhone model number to figure out which version of the device you have. This also works for older iPads.
- Your iPhone’s model number is located on the back near the bottom of the phone.
- It’s in extremely small print. You might need some extra light or even a magnifying glass!
- It will say Model: A#### (The letter A followed by four numbers).
- Write down the model number.
